Eloise only noticed when the nanite activity log registered two percent of normal workload from the apartment usage metrics. Bedsheets were not being reconstituted. Bathwater was not being clarified. Shed skin did not become dust.
Mary only noticed when Tuesday came and went, and he wasn’t in her bed. Had he tired of her and moved on to another concufriend? She carried others who were nines, but the loss of a ten would certainly affect her companionship rankings.
Gabriel only noticed when he needed a favor. Damned inconvenient but who could question the motives of a ten? Even those of equal steading did not question the results.
Bob only noticed when he when he was escorted above the two hundredth floor. From the scars, these floors were Valhalla and mere myths; a place to hope for if you died well. Repairs were not needed this high up and he couldn’t help but wonder if he’d actually be allowed to take the lift back down or if there’d be a more terminal descent in his future.
Moira—Gadreel’s wife—noticed, but only as an echo, his footprint in her mind diminishing with every distanced repetition of memory.
The world, however, did not notice.
